15-Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 14 - Deal Breakers

Hello! Welcome to day four of the 15-Day Book Blogger Challenge!

Today is all about book deal breakers! There are a few things that will make me put a book down or not read it at all. I think a list would be appropriate here, so here it is.

  1. Bad editing - Nothing will make me put a book down quite like bad editing. As an editor, I understand how difficult the job is. But every little thing is important. I'm not saying a comma in the wrong place will have me chucking a book, but when you can't get the difference between passed and past, then yes, I'm probably done with your book. Ugh.
  2. Insta-love - Okay, I probably won't put the book down, but you won't get a good review. It's hard for me when there is no reason why two people fell in love. They were just totally and utterly attracted and couldn't help it? No. Ugh.
  3. Weird love triangles - When there are too many people in love in a book, it gets kind of creepy. Especially when one is sleeping with the other two. The only exception I can think of right now is Stephanie Plum. That girl needs to get her shit together, but I love Ranger AND Morelli. Oy.
  4. Creepy sex - Think Fifty Shades. I've never read them and I highly doubt I ever will. I am no prude in my reading, but I don't need abuse for no good reason in my life. No thanks.
I'm sure there are more, but the editing thing seriously gets to me. The others aren't quite as bad, and I'll generally read just about anything. I don't mind most genres, even non-fiction. And I try to make it through everything I read. Sometimes that even means skimming through the rest. But the four above will have me cringing, if not throwing the book out the window. AKA turning off my Kindle or iPod. :o)

  1. Your list is spot on. I think I'd add plot holes and shallow characters,, but I guess that goes without saying, huh? I enjoyed your post. :-)

  2. AGREE with all of these. Meh. Insta-love is so silly. And bad editing makes me cringe.

  3. Good list! I agree with all of these, especially insta-love. I'll add "creepy love" - too many romance novels seem to think it's romantic when a guy stalks a girl, is controlling, verbally abusive, etc. Not romantic at all! That will make me throw a book across the room in a heartbeat. I agree with Lexa - plot holes or inconsistencies also frustrate me.

  4. But, poorly edited instalove often leads to creepy sex love triangles... The irony of it all.
