First Person Present Tense

This is an interesting topic to me, because I've realized that some people absolutely love first person present tense and some people hate it. I actually didn't think much about it before deciding to write the Delaney's Gift Series this way. Not all my books are written like this. Engraved is written in third person past tense, and the Prowl Trilogy is written in first person past tense.

First person is my desired POV when writing. I write much more naturally that way than in third person. It allows me to really get inside the character's head and connect with them.

I don't analyze a lot of things while writing. I just allow the characters to dictate where we go. When I started writing Dazzle it just came out in present tense. I assumed that was how Delaney wanted it. I felt that she, Sam, and Micah wanted the reader to experience things when they did. It makes sense to me now, because they are on such a formative journey and I like how they aren't just telling us about events that already took place, but rather taking us along for the ride.

Honestly, I don't think there is a right or wrong way to create a novel, as long as the writer is authentic and true to the characters they are writing about.

Amber Garza has had a passion for writing since she was a little girl, making books out of notebook paper and staples. As an adult she's worked hard to make her dream of being published a reality. She writes while listening to music (mostly the Civil Wars), and drinking lots of coffee.
