Jennifer Hendren - By The Pale Moonlight

Wow. This book totally surprised me! I read a good review before I started this one, but seeing for myself was definitely the best idea I've had in a while. It starts off with small hints, a hot boy, and a girl with a boy problem. Makenna is strong, smart, and scared, but she makes it work. She has a past that we learn about little by little, and things start to change for her - and not all in a good way. A girl is killed the night Mac is attacked by.. something. She's determined to find out. But could her friend (and maybe more?) Ty be behind the attack? Now she REALLY needs to know!
This novel has twists, turns, shocks, and surprises. There is a little romance and a lot of suspense. It keeps you guessing until the VERY end. And speaking of the end.. killer! I'm downright CRAVING the next one! The love story in this one is absolutely swoon-worthy, but you never know who to trust. I always had a nagging feeling, but I never guessed the extent of evil in this book. Just do yourself a favor: check this one out for yourself!
Bottom line: Definitely read this one. You'll be begging for the sequel!

Makenna Wilhelm knows all of her friends have their quirks, but when Ty shows up naked in her yard one morning, she finds it beyond weird. Stranger still are the deep gashes across Ty’s chest and his sudden ability to hear and smell things that no human should.
During a moonlit night, Ty’s secret is revealed. He’s no longer the boy she’s crushed on forever, but rather a werewolf with one serious aversion for all things silver. Makenna is left wondering if he’s to blame for the recent death of one of their classmates, the apparent victim of an animal attack.
With the help of Melanie, the dead girl’s friend, they manage to shed doubt on Ty’s guilt only to discover Makenna was the intended prey. Even worse, she’s still a target.
In a race against the full moon, the trio struggles to find who murdered the young woman. However, without a way to cure Ty, they have no way of knowing who poses the greater threat: Ty or the unknown enemy.

4/5 book sharks!
Mickey: Hello there, Jennifer Hendren! Welcome to the blog! Please introduce yourself.
Jennifer: Hi All!! *waves wildly* I’m Jen (You can call me Jennifer or Jenny, but only if you say the latter with a Forrest Gump accent). Last year, I released my debut novel, BY THE PALE MOONLIGHT, a whodunit YA with werewolves, and I’m preparing to release the second book in the series, WALKING IN SHADOW. (Yes, there’s a third.) I also write adult mystery/suspense. Thanks for having me, Mickey! Very excited to be here. Hope I don’t choke. :o)
Mickey: Your debut novel, By The Pale Moonlight, is definitely unforgettable. What inspired the plot of the story?
Jennifer: Oh boy. That’s a tough one. You know, to be honest, I set out to write a book about werewolves. I went in knowing I wanted it to feature two best friends, but that was really all I had. The rest developed in the process of writing the book. As I went along, I decided that I didn’t want to do any over the top world building—that I wanted it to be about two normal kids facing a really extraordinary situation. But yeah, I’m a pantster, so I winged it. I know, I know. Crazy. But outlines make my skin itch.
Mickey: I hear ya! When can we expect the sequel, Walking In Shadow?
Jennifer: I’ve set the release date for May 31st. I don’t know if I’ll make that deadline, but I will get as close to that as possible. The main thing is that I want it to be right before I release it. If that takes a little more time, I’ll have to bite the bullet and push it back. But I’m trying Very Hard. :o) SO super excited to send it out into the world. I heart it.
Mickey: We'll wait for the perfect version, but it will be #1 on my TBR, that's for sure! Why oh why did you leave us hanging like that at the end?! That cliffhanger is brutal!
Jennifer: LOL! Yes, I know. It’s definitely a decision that keeps on giving. Some people really hate it. Some people love/hate it. What it boils down to is that I personally love cliffhangers. (And if I didn’t end the book there, it would’ve turned into one humungo novel.) Basically, I ran a bunch of different endings through my mind, and that was the only one that had the “holy sh*t” factor for me. I knew once I read it back that it was the right place to stop, so I did…bringing on the wrath of many a’ reader.
Mickey: I like the "holy sh*t factor" then! Any plans for an audio book? If you could pick any narrator for your novel, who would you choose?
Jennifer: Oh goodness. Honestly, I’ve never thought about it. It would be complete awesomesauce to have one, though. I have no idea who I’d want to narrate it, but I can imagine it would be Very Weird to hear my characters voices spoken out loud. (I’m running through all of the audio book narrators I’ve listened to, and I’ve got nothing. Lol)
Mickey: What idea or book do you wish you'd come up with or written first?
Jennifer: Where to begin? There are many. I’m constantly knocked on my fanny by the work of others. If I have to choose one, though, I think it would be The UGLIES trilogy (plus 1) by Scott Westerfeld. Genius. And might I add…CLIFFHANGERS. (I also have to give it up to THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak. A-mazing.)
Mickey: I think you're the first to not say Hunger Games of Harry Potter.. haha! Where is your favorite place to work on a novel?
Jennifer: I write in my dining room. (Very glamorous.) There’s a brick wall straight ahead, but more importantly, there are no books or TV in sight. I’m easily distracted by shiny things, so I try to strip it all away so I can concentrate. Someday I’d like to have a really cool office, but I kind of doubt I’m the office type. (On a side note, one year I vacationed at a beach side house AND a house in the mountains. I have to say those were both really cool places to write. They tie for my favorite, though obviously they aren’t as awesome as my dining room…)
Mickey: I bet we're all easily distracted.. lol. So Goodreads says you have dogs! As an animal lover myself, I must know: what kind of dogs do you have?
Jennifer: Two ragamuffins. Terrier mixes from the pound. CUTE AS CAN BE. And spoiled, so spoiled. Man, they have it good!
Mickey: Mine do too! Love it! Who is your favorite fictional villain?
Jennifer: Hard one again. I have a few. Voldemort from HARRY POTTER (Y’all know why), Hannibal Lector (what’s not to love?), Jack Randall from the OUTLANDER series (he’s so evil, but yet, I kind of feel sorry for him), Mrs. Danvers from REBECCA (creepy), and Pennywise from IT (Why? Because clowns are scary, yo!).
Mickey: YAY Hannibal!! Ahh! Thanks so much for being on the blog today, Jennifer! Any final thoughts?
Jennifer: I just wanted to thank you for having me. It’s been a complete blast!!
