I take a deep breath so as not to display my true feelings. I can’t let her know she’s gotten to me. I have to ignore the jab at my mom and move on.
“Collection? How many animals do you have here?”
I look around straining my senses to feel them out, but the stone walls block out any animal sounds I might be able to hear.
“I have no animals.” She looks away for a moment.
“But you said…” I trail off not knowing where this is going.
“I said I have big cats, but they’re not animals.”
I raise an eyebrow, even that hurts. “Then what are they?”
She smiles a sickeningly sweet smile. “Cryptids, of course.”
I do my best not to vomit right here and now. “You keep them? HERE?”
Here, where there’s hardly any sunlight, here in this prison of darkness? How many do they have here? What don’t we know about Malsumis’s plans? And then it hits me--the mole. Whoever it was, they’ve been doing this to our kind for a long time. Caging them here. Letting us become their “pets.”
