Kiora thought she had never heard a lie until she was sixteen. But she was wrong. Her entire existence was based on nothing but. She thought that evil did not exist. Lie. That magic was not real. Lie. And that the land of Meros was all there was. One more lie.
With Aleric telling her that evil is knocking on the door and that she is the only one who can stop them she has a choice to make. Refuse, or start the wildest most painful ride of her life.
She reluctantly dips her toe into her new existence of magic and threads, dragons and shapeshifters, and the person who wants to take control of it all: the evil Dralazar.
However, this journey was never meant to be hers alone. She will be accompanied by a Protector. To her disbelief, and utter irritation they name the hotheaded, stubborn, non -magical, (albeit gorgeous) Prince Emane. They will have to trust each other with their lives, but right now Kiora would settle for a non hostile conversation.
And now it comes down to this, If you had never heard a lie, would you know when you heard one? Is knowing good from evil innate? Kiora finds herself having to decide who lives and who dies on those very questions.
Devri: Hi! I am a mother of two beautiful kids who has a tendency to overload my plate. Don’t we all? I teach preschool, voice lessons, run kids to this, that, and the other, and write novels in all my spare time. Rest assured… my tables are dusty and my laundry is usually in a state of emergency. Sigh.
Mickey: Tell us about your novel, Wings of Arian. What inspired the story of Kiora?
Devri: Honestly, I was watching T.V. one night and watched someone’s throat get slit with no reaction. What startled me was that I had had NO reaction. It got me thinking, I wonder how horrified someone would be that had lived, say seventy five years ago, with the things we as a society have become so accustomed to? And from that, Wings of Arian was born. A story of a society that has been completely sheltered from any evil for a thousand years and what happens as it returns. But really, what fun would that story be without mixing in dragons and magic and shapeshifters?
Mickey: What are your plans for upcoming novels? How far do you plan to take your Wings of Arian series?
Devri: Wings of Arian will be a Trilogy.
Mickey: Do you have any thoughts on audio books? If you could choose anyone to narrate your novel, who would you choose?
Devri: I think audio books are fantastic and I would love to see Wings of Arian in audio format. Who should narrate it? Oh my, I have no idea. That is going to be hard for me. My degree is in theater and I can hear my book so clearly in my head. It will be difficult to hear someone else’s take on it. At the same time, I am sure it would be so exciting to hear it come to life!
Mickey: You're married with two kids. You also run a daycare and you teach voice lessons. How do you find time to write!?
Devri: Hmmm, well sometimes I resort to sitting in a corner twitching instead of writing. Ha! (No really, it happens). I usually write in the evenings after the kids are in bed. I am also blessed with a super supportive husband who lets me ‘run away’ for hours at a time with my laptop.
Mickey: I read that you want to record a Christmas album someday. What songs would you sing?
Devri: Oh wow, you really did your research! I am classically trained so I really do love the classic pieces. Gesu Bambino, Oh Holy Night, Fum Fum Fum, The First Noel, Angels We Have Heard on High. I could keep going but it would be a long list.
Mickey: What idea/book do you wish you'd thought of/written first?
Devri: That is such a hard question! I have been sitting here staring at the computer for five minutes at least. Of course I think it would have been cool to write any number of books. But then I hesitate because I obviously love what I have come up with and feel I can write. Part of what makes the books we love so amazingly brilliant is not only the concept, but the voice and ideas of the author. So even if I would have thought of it first, it would have been different. Better? I don’t know, maybe not. There is nothing more frustrating to me than reading an amazing premise and having it fall flat on its face because of the author. Then there are other stories that sound ho-hum, but the writer is phenomenal and the book is completely enjoyable. So in the end, I guess I am not answering this question at all am I? LOL!
Mickey: Who's your favorite fictional villain?
Devri: I don’t like villains. Most the time I want to strangle them. If they are written too evil I have a hard time reading it because it makes my skin crawl. I know, I am SO lame!! What makes me even more lame is that I totally enjoyed writing my villain. I am a large box of contradictions, what can I say.
Mickey: If you had to title your life story using song titles, what would you call it?
Devri: I am laughing so hard right now. You found more of my contradictions. Although I am a music person, and I can sing all the lyrics, don’t ask me what the title is, or who sung it. I have no idea! So, this question is a bust for me. My husband on the other hand could have whipped it out in no time.
(Speaking of my husband- that is who edits all my posts so I don’t embarrass myself. Upon reading this post my husband informed me that my song should be Crazy Train by Ozzie Osborn. Ok, probably appropriate. Then followed it up with Evil Woman. Nice honey, nice.)
Mickey: I appreciate your husband's input, since it made me laugh!! Thanks so much for being on the blog today! Any parting words?
