TGIF and Week In Review (26)

Hosted by Ginger over at G-Reads, TGIF is a way to recap the week on your blog and answer a fun question she asks bloggers. Linking up spreads the word, so visit her blog for more info and to participate! :o) Here's the question for this week:

Writing Reviews 101: What's your process for writing book reviews? Any tips or suggestions you would recommend to other bloggers?

When I post book reviews, I like to include the cover, summary, and details of the book. Then I'll try to write a summary in my own words and get down my main feelings on the book. After I do all that, I like to summarize for people who want the highlights with the What I Liked/What I Didn't Like section. I finish up with the Bottom Line (is this a must read or not) and a starred rating. I've received many compliments on the format of my reviews, so I'll keep it that way. It's basically what I'd like to see in a review because it gives details for those who want more and then it outlines the basics for lazies like me.. lol.

If I had to make suggestions, I would suggest a definitive starred rating system for your reviews. It's a quick snapshot of how you felt about a certain book, so if people don't have a lot of time to read your review but trust your judgment, they can see how you felt without getting too in depth. And there are people out there (like me) who don't always want to read reviews. Personally, I don't even like to read the synopsis of a book before I read it, so I certainly don't want to know your intimate thoughts at times. A starred rating system provides me with all I need.

Hope that helps! Let me know your thoughts. Happy Friday!!

  1. Interesting answer - especially about the rating. It's not necessary for me if I'm reading a review on a blog (I read the reviews on Goodreads for that).

  2. I think it's an interesting thought about the rating system. I've been debating about whether or not to do that for my blog, so we'll see how it goes.

  3. I had to recently add in a rating system, just because I think it helps put into perspective how much I liked the book! It seems to help!
