Blog Tour: Laurel Dewey - Promissory Payback/Unrevealed (Stef)

Welcome to blog tour stop #2 of 2 today! Stef is on the blog sharing her thoughts about Laurel Dewey's Promissory Payback and Unrevealed! Please check out her reviews, then go look into these books. Jane Perry is a character we both enjoyed and would like to read more about, so we hope you do too!

Laurel Dewey’s Detective Jane Perry is quickly becoming one of the most distinctive, dynamic, and unforgettable characters in suspense fiction today. She’s rock hard, but capable of extraordinary tenderness. She’s a brilliant cop, but she’s capable of making life-altering mistakes. She’s uncannily talented, and she’s heartbreakingly human.

In Unrevealed, Dewey gives us four indelible portraits of Jane Perry. Filled with secrets disclosed and others desperately covered, Unrevealed is an absolute treat for all Jane Perry fans – four stories, all told from Jane's distinctive and unparallelled perspective.

If you are looking for a cynical, put through the ringer and barely squeezed out the other side cop, look no further. This collection of short Jane Perry stories gives us four peeks into different spots in Jane's life and really shows you who this character is. I really enjoyed her personality -- tough, always tough, but she has her emotional side too. She probably just won't let you know she has it flat out.

In 96 pages Laurel Dewey manages to share four different encounters that Jane has and if you're skeptical about short stories packing a punch, you should check these out. I enjoy suspense fiction and I enjoyed reading these! :)

#1 - ANONYMOUS
This story begins with Jane at an AA meeting, and we delve into a bit of her family life and where she came from. This helps set the tone for her character so you can see where she's come from a bit, and helped to flesh her out. She meets a woman there who says she needs her help, and I kind of saw what happened coming, just not the very end of it. Overall I thought it was an intriguing story and definitely worth checking out.

#2 - YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
I liked this story the most out of all of them. Jane goes to a local school to give an unexpected speech on a career day. She meets a very interesting kid and uncovers a pretty twisted secret. Cops see the darker side of human beings, they know what people are really capable of and what happens behind closed doors that the rest of us would rather forget. I like that Jane figured this out and did her thing... one less bad guy in the world now!

#3 - YOU'RE ONLY AS SICK AS YOUR SECRETS
I had never heard this phrase before, so the title really caught my eye. I did like this story second best of the four, because Jane played this one close to the vest. She uncovers things during her investigation into the death of the wife of an English man, and she keeps them to herself for the big reveal at the end. It leaves you trying to put the puzzle together yourself and figure out what she found so you can solve the mystery with her.

#4 - THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM
Jane finds herself in a bar, a place she does not belong, holding a conversation with an old acquaintance. Being the smart cookie that she is, Jane knows something is wrong, and she's going to fix it. It took me a bit to catch up, and while I didn't enjoy this one as much as 2 or 3, you'll find yourself caught a little off balance and wanting to know what happens at the end.

Promissory Payback

Laurel Dewey’s Detective Jane Perry is quickly becoming one of the most distinctive, dynamic, and unforgettable characters in suspense fiction today. She’s rock hard, but capable of extraordinary tenderness. She’s a brilliant cop, but she’s capable of making life-altering mistakes. She’s uncannily talented, and she’s heartbreakingly human.

In this novelette, Jane is called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a woman who profited greatly from the misfortunes of others. The case leaves Jane with little question about motive...and with a seemingly endless number of suspects.

This was my second foray into the Jane Perry world, and I have to say, even though I was tossed smack dab in the middle of her series I still enjoyed where I found myself.

A woman, Carolyn Handel, has cheated numerous people out of their life savings with a Ponzi scheme. She is found brutally murdered in her upscale Denver house and Jane Perry is called in a Monday morning because that's her job -- figuring out what low humanity has come to now, who did it, and why. The one thing I have learned about Jane is that she is thorough, and she goes about her business in her usual tough but tenacious and driven way. Whoever wrote "Karma is a bitch" on her victim's back was going to find out that Karma has a new name, and Jane is coming for them.

I thought this was a great taste of Jane's character, and it's left me wanting to find out more about her. It's not very long, but in 80 pages Dewey managed to get my attention, hold it, and complete a story that left me wanting to know more about one of her characters and also gave me a bit of a surprise. If you're looking for a murder mystery and enjoy a foul-mouthed female cop as much as I do, check this one out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
