Blog Tour: Laurel Dewey - Promissory Payback/Unrevealed

Today is blog tour stop 1 of 2 on this blog for the Promissory Payback/Unrevealed tour! I (Mickey) am sharing my thoughts on the two books, and tomorrow will be Stef's reviews! I hope you pick these two up if you haven't yet, and I hope you come back tomorrow to see what Stef has to say about these. So without further ado, here are my reviews for Promissory Payback and Unrevealed by Laurel Dewey!

Promissory Payback

Laurel Dewey’s Detective Jane Perry is quickly becoming one of the most distinctive, dynamic, and unforgettable characters in suspense fiction today. She’s rock hard, but capable of extraordinary tenderness. She’s a brilliant cop, but she’s capable of making life-altering mistakes. She’s uncannily talented, and she’s heartbreakingly human.

In this novelette, Jane is called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a woman who profited greatly from the misfortunes of others. The case leaves Jane with little question about motive...and with a seemingly endless number of suspects.

Review:
This is my first taste of Laurel Dewey's work. It happens to be in the middle of the Jane Perry series, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this chapter of her story. And in it we find the brutal death of sixty-ish woman who thrived on others' misfortunes. She swindled some people from their money, and it caused someone to get so angry that he/she murdered her. In comes Jane to investigate the murder and bring justice.

I'd like to know more about Jane's past now. She's a tough, honest, smart, foul-mouthed police woman, and I love her personality. It was a little over the top sometimes, but it didn't stop me from reading it. I did think that everything was a bit convenient with how it all worked out. Granted, this novella wasn't very long, but it certainly could have been longer.

This was a good, entertaining novella if you're looking for a murder mystery. I definitely am interested in more of Jane's story so I'll be looking for the first novels of the series.

In Unrevealed, Dewey gives us four indelible portraits of Jane Perry. Filled with secrets disclosed and others desperately covered, Unrevealed is an absolute treat for all Jane Perry fans – four stories, all told from Jane's distinctive and unparallelled perspective.

Review:
This is a short story collection of Jane Perry stories. If you haven't checked out Jane Perry, go ahead and pick up one of the novels about her. She's smart, witty, funny, tough, dry, and foul-mouthed.. all the things I like in a female MC. She's also a cop, so she sees a lot of bad things. These are some of her stories.

#1 - ANONYMOUS
Written in Jane's perspective, this short story goes over part of Jane's AA meetings and woman she meets there. It held my attention and had a twist at the end. Jane's so smart! I had my theories and I was kind of right, but not all the way. It was definitely a smart story though.

#2 - YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
Jane also tells this story herself. She goes to a local school to speak about being a cop. She comes across a special boy and uncovers a gruesome secret. This story was a little out there for me, and I didn't feel like it belonged in Jane's world. Not a bad story though.

#3 - YOU'RE ONLY AS SICK AS YOUR SECRETS
This story, also told by Jane, REALLY interested me. Winston's wife is found dead in their house, and there are so many secrets revealed to find out the truth around her death. There were so many twists and turns, and Jane kept certain details to herself for a while. That makes first person so interesting sometimes. But this story turned out to be my favorite.

#4 - THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM
No, things aren't always what they seem, are they? I didn't pick up on what was going on for a while there. Told in third person, this story finds Jane showing up to a bar (a big no-no for a recovering alcoholic) and running in to a friend. But something is NOT right, and Jane knows all about it. This one also had me on pins and needles, but it just wasn't as good as the previous one.

Overall Rating:
