Top Ten Tuesday - Freebie

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, this feature includes random weekly top tens. This week's list is - Top Ten Freebie!

Mickey: I'm picking one of the previous lists in which I have not participated, and it is.. Top Ten Book to Movie Adaptations! In no particular order..

  1. The Princess Bride
Who doesn't love this movie?! The book came first, and the movie is extremely similar. The man is reading this story to his grandson who doesn't want to hear it because he thinks it's a kissing, love story. Everything in this book makes the movie so great. Love it!
  2. Silence of the Lambs
This whole book/movie series is amazing. It's unbelievable how different they end, though! I'd seen the movies a long time ago, but I read the books in 2009. I was impressed with how they filmed that brain scene, but the end of Hannibal is crazy compared to what they did with the movie.
  3. Atonement
When I first read this book, I was bored at the beginning and couldn't get through it. I decided to watch the movie to see if the book was worth it, and I wouldn't recommend that EVER. The movie really moved me, so I finished the book and I was so glad. It became one of my favorites.
  4. Pride and Prejudice (any version)
I particularly enjoy the 1940 adaptation, but I just basically love all versions of this movie. I love the A&E 6 hour one with Colin Firth, and I also love the new Keira Knightley version. I just love this book! And this leads me to Bridget Jones's Diary. This didn't make the list, but not on purpose really. I loved the movie way more than the book. Maybe it should be on this list.. lol.
  5. To Kill a Mockingbird
Who doesn't love this one, too?! I really don't have much to say besides the fact that it's amazing. :o)
  6. The Reader
I listened to this one after it was nominated for an Oscar, and I found that I love Campbell Scott as a narrator. So I watched the movie, and it's true to the story. It's very touching and emotional. I really liked this one.
  7. Derailed
This one probably isn't as popular as some of these, but I listened to this one as well after having seen the movie. I think it's easier to compare the two if I've seen the movie first. I'm not even sure that I knew they were the same when I picked up the audio book, but I certainly enjoyed it. And I found that the movie did the book justice.
  8. Water for Elephants
When I heard that Robert Pattinson was playing Jacob, I was not thrilled. After seeing the movie, I was way more impressed and pleased than I thought I would be. I was less impressed with Reese Witherspoon, as I didn't think she was really the Marlena I was picturing. Either way, the movie worked well even with all the changes.
  9. Shutter Island
I saw the movie first, so the comparison was much easier: these two are the same exact thing except for the last 5 minutes of the movie. It goes beyond where the book ends, and that was certainly entertaining. I had no idea, of course, so when I read the book I was super surprised by the end of the novel.
  10. The Help
Just saw this one on Sunday. The book got 5 stars, which never happens in my world. This means that I absolutely had to see the movie. While it was slightly different, nothing really took away from the story. I was basically the whole story, and that usually sits well with me. Go see this one, especially if you've read the novel!
There you have it, folks. I do have some honorable mentions (besides Bridget Jones.. lol): True Grit (the new version), Something Borrowed, Shopgirl, The Notebook, and A Single Man. Book to movie adaptations I couldn't stand? PS I Love You, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, He's Just Not That Into You, Twilight, and Nights in Rodanthe. Oy.

Happy Tuesday!

  3. Mickey, "Atonement" and "Water for Elephants" were wonderful movie adaptations. I was a bit worried about Robert Pattinson as well, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. I haven't made it to see "The Help" yet, but the buzz is great.

  4. Water for Elephants is one of my favourite books and I wasn't impressed with the film version although the effects were amazing. I couldn't tell that Rosie wasn't real!

  5. Nice list choices. Some of those movies are my favorites too! I just got my hands on The Help. I'm trying to read it before I see the movie, but it looks so good. I'm sure I'll love them both. :)
