Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, this feature includes random weekly top tens. This week's list is - Top Ten Books Tackling "Tough" Issues. I thought this list was going to be filled to the gills with Jodi Picoult because she is ALWAYS dealing with rough topics in her novels. Maybe that's why I love them so much. But this list made me realize how many books I've read with deeply broken characters, hardcore issues, and sensitive topics. I also see that they've been about a myriad topics! I love each of these novels. And of course I couldn't stop at 10 ;o)
- Jodi Picoult - Sing You Home (Same-sex marriage)
- Jay Asher - 13 Reasons Why (Suicide)
- Kathryn Stockett - The Help (Segregation in the '60s)
- Tabitha Suzuma - Forbidden (Incest)
- Mindi Scott - Freefall (Alcoholism)
- Ellen Hopkins - Crank (Drug abuse)
- Jodi Picoult - Nineteen Minutes (High school shooting)
- Laura Wiess - How It Ends (Loss)
- Lolly Winston - Good Grief (Death of a spouse)
- Jacquelyn Mitchard - The Deep End of the Ocean (Kidnap)
- Sherman Alexie - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Poverty)
- Laurie Halse Anderson - Speak (Rape)
Unfortunately this almost looks like a carbon copy of last week's top ten! Either way, I hope you enjoyed my list! Have different books to share about this topic? Comment with a link and I'll go check your list out ;o) Happy Tuesday!!
Wow, some of those books I've heard of. I defintely read Sherman Alexie's book since it's uber popular, but Speak has defintely caused some problems. Some teachers have banned the book. Idk why since it's a subject that needs to be discussed in schools.
ReplyDeletebut yeah, great list. I may have to check some of them out. Hmm.
13 Reasons Why, Forbidden, and Speak are all good books to read! I have Freefall on my TBR, but hadn't read it yet! Great list!
ReplyDeleteOK ... I need to read 13 Reasons Why. I picked My Sister's Keeper but Sing You Home is a great choice too.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I haven't heard of The Deep End of the Ocean before so I'll check it out on Goodreads.

Speak made my list as it's the only one I've read of this group. I do have many of the others on my TBR list, though. Great choices!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about The Help, but that is a good selection!

I've seen 13 Reasons Why on several lists, so I put it on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely read 13RW if you haven't yet! It's a good one. They all are. And Marce - I liked Good Grief way more than Happiness Sold Separately. :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone, for visiting and commenting on my list!!
Yours is the best I've seen so far! Great list & alliteration!

Awwww thank you so much!! And I appreciate the mention of my alliteration ;o)
ReplyDeleteOooo good thinking with The Help!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good list. I'd have been tempted to swap We Need to Talk About Kevin for Nineteen Minutes but only because I haven't read the latter yet.
ReplyDeleteFreefall made our list too. It's nice to see others include it. I think it's such a relevant book.
ReplyDeleteReading Lark's Top 10
